A Functional Mutation
A significant part of my work involves adapting and re-purposing antique and reclaimed furniture and metalwork. Such jobs rarely find their way into my blog. So here is a rare offering from a few years ago. Newly created pillow-mounted bronze urns replace the original gas-lamps on these late 19th century wrought steel standards. I had actually intended them as either uplighters or plant-stands - but the client decided to create rather torcheres instead. #restoration #repurpos

A precursor to the Phoenix
For many years, I have been involved in the world of antiques. Restoring and reconstructing historic furniture and metalwork has had a huge influence on my own work. But I never seek to explicitly copy or mimic period design styles. Nevertheless, ideas do inevitably rub off. Phoenix is probably the piece with the clearest link to a specific antique. It is no coincidence that I was deeply involved in researching and re-constructing this beautiful (and very rare) firegrate - th
