YACHT STAIRCASE

The decorative lining of this 5-deck spiral staircase was required to have a carved texture which would appear to flow continuously, and without repetition, around the full staircase circumference, from top to bottom.

As DKT Artworks Design and Project Manager, and working in collaboration with fit-out contractor Bill Cleyndert & Co, I devised a pair of square format texture flow patterns which could be rotated and edge-matched in any permutation; constrained to the maximum panel dimensions which could be craned into the hull at the Azimut Benetti shipyard. A curved mould jig was used to cast the texture in fibre-reinforced Jesmonite under technical guidance from Feathercast, and a plywood backing was then attached to stabilise the panels and enable on-site fixing.
